The Autistic Self Advocacy Network’s third annual gala and celebration at the National Press Club is November 12th. Henry Frost is the recipient of the 2013 Award for Service to the Self Advocacy Movement. Dr.  Anne Donnellan  will receive the 2013 Outstanding Ally Award.

Henry Frost is a young Autistic student and Florida native who launched a successful, nationally recognized campaign to gain access to the public school in his own neighborhood .The campaign, I Stand With Henry, collected thousands of petition signatures and supporters across multiple social media platforms expressing support for Henry’s right to an equal education. Henry won the battle for his right to attend the public school close to his home.

Dr. Anne Donnellan is a nationally recognized advocate against restraint, seclusion, and aversives. She has been a vocal proponent of community integration and inclusive education, and has been an ardent opponent of abusive interventions for decades. For over two decades, Anne’s scholarly work has focused on repositioning autism as another way of living, and understanding sensory and movement differences in autistic people, in keeping with the principles of neurodiversity. She is currently a professor in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego, where she founded and directed the Autism Institute.

Please join ASAN in celebrating Anne and Henry’s accomplishments and honoring their embodiment of the principles of the disability rights movement.

Congressman Gregg Harper, sponsor of the TEAM Acts (HR-509, HR-510, and HR-511) and the Fair Wages for People with Disabilities Act (HR-831), will be speaking at the gala and celebration at the National Press Club this November.

The Transition towards Excellence in Achievement and Mobility (TEAM) Acts are designed to create transition services for students with significant disabilities under the presumption that all people with disabilities can achieve successful employment outcomes. These bills require multiple systems to collaborate for the best outcomes in integrated employment at minimum wage or higher and improved access to post-secondary education for autistic students and those with other significant disabilities.
